Eating in the dark
Posted: June 20th, 2010 | Author: A.J. | Filed under: random |To celebrate my birthday, my wonderful and incredibly thoughtful girlfriends took me on an adventure - an eating in the dark adventure at O.NOIR!
What an interesting experience.
In a lit area (photo above), you are able to pick your entire meal. The waiters/waitresses are all blind, and they then lead you into a dark, dark, incredibly dark room. For some reason, I had assumed that when they said “eating in the dark”, they actually meant “eating in the semi-dark - there’ll be a nightlight of some sort around”. Oh man, I was wrong.
I went with 3 of my girlfriends, but it was really like I was eating alone. I could feel my food, my utensils, and could only gauge the emptiness of my plate with my fingers.
Let me tell you - losing the ability to see - even if it was for just that one hour of my life - was incredibly terrifying. I am uber thankful that I was with them, of all people, to experience this. It makes you grateful for the ability to see.
O.NOIR has 2 locations in Canada: one in Montreal and the other here, in Toronto.

That’s pretty crazy! I remember in grade eight our teacher made us do this exercise where we had to walk around blindfolded to find out what it was like to be blind. We had a partner who could tell us what way to go if it looked like we were going to bash into something but couldn’t touch us. Needless to say I fell into a ditch outside on the side of the playground when my partner wasn’t paying attention! haha
